Aim for CO2 Poor and Biomass Rich Economy
The BioEnergy Site reports from the World Biofuels Conference in Amsterdam that former Dutch Prime Minister Ruud Lubbers, who now chairs the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands and is leading the Rotterdam Climate Initiative, said that incomes on farms around the world can be increased not only by growing food, but also by growing biomass.
With demand for electricity and transportation growing worldwide, Mr Lubbers said that the need for biomass will increase. As more and more resources are brought on line, sustainability remain a key challenge.
The goal is to create a CO2 poor world while creating a biomass rich economy.
According to Mr Lubbers:
Although there is a long way to go, there are opportunities to achieve growth in biomass production. But this has to be done while taking care of biodiversity. We can combine food production with a low carbon energy production.
