Climate Change and Palm Oil Go Back to the Future

In Washington, the stage is set for lawmakers to duke it out over climate change science…again. Expect a Congressional food fight as the EPA presents its budget in front of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee Tuesday. While the real debate should be over the efficacy of a regulatory approach to climate change versus a legislative cap-and-trade bill, lawmakers will be unable to resist the urge to invoke Climategate and Snowmageddon to drive their points home.

Meanwhile, in the EU, a report from the European Commission leaked earlier this year suggests the governmental body is protecting palm oil interests in Malaysia and Indonesia. Although palm oil has been linked to deforestation in the region and often held up as warning against first-generation biofuels, the report indicates that the Commission has classified palm oil plantations as “dense forests” to conceal biofuel linkeages to deforestation.

But without deforestation, a new study finds that based on nine criteria, sugar and palm oil are among the most sustainable biofuel crops.
