Pakistan: Business Leader Calls for Increased Use of Biomass

Presenting at the Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ICCI), President of the organization, Zahid Maqbool, urged the Pakistani Government to harness biomass potential to bridge the gap between electricity demand and supply.  Pakistan currently needs 11,500 MW of power to meet demand, but only produces 8,000 MW of electricity.

Maqbool said biomass such as rice husk, cotton stalks, jute waste, and other crop residues are produced in abundance in Pakistan and could be used for power generation.  Waste-to-energy technologies, he added, have emerged to produce clean energy through the combustion of biomass like agricultural residues and municipal solid waste.

He added that the country’s energy demand is projected to triple by 2040 and conventional fossil fuels would not be able to meet future energy needs.  Biomass offers am attractive and cheap alternative source of energy.

The graph below, from the International Energy Association (IEA), shows Pakistan’s electrical generation by fuel.
