Release of Senate Climate Bill Delayed Indefinitely
The much-anticipated release today of a bipartisan Climate bill has been delayed indefinitely due to one of the bill’s key Republican backers, Sen. Lindsay Graham (R-SC), withdrawing support over the weekend.
Graham, who had joined with Sens. Kerry (D-MA) and Lieberman (I-CT), backed out after news surfaced that Senate leadership would simultaneously move forward on an immigration bill.
Graham called the decision, by Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid, to place the climate bill behind as-yet unwritten immigration legislation “a cynical political ploy.” Reid is facing a difficult re-election fight, and his home state, Nevada, has a large Latino population.
There is no time-table for the bill, but Kerry insists that it will move forward with support from three major oil companies.
