Senator Harkin Announces $4.3 to Stimulate Algae Research in His Home State
Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today announced that $4.3 million will be awarded to Iowa State University to investigate approaches to increasing growth rates and carbon dioxide-assimilation rates of algae. The funding comes from the new Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) in the U.S. Department of Energy.
The research aims to make microalgae- based biofuel production a viable, sustainable, and versatile option for fulfilling the need for renewable alternatives to fossil fuels.
