US to Speed up Patent Process for Cleantech
The Cleantech Group reports that the U.S. Commerce Department’s Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has launched a new pilot program to fast track the review of clean technology patents. Under the current system, the process can take up to 40 months; USPTO is projecting that the program will shave about a year off the review process. To participate, applicants must agree to abandon existing applications, and only 3,000 applications will be accepted at this time.
The program sends a firm signal that the U.S. plans to become more competitive in the arms race for cleantech innovation and commercialization.
